Your child’s first visit to the dentist can often be a stressful experience, especially if your child is anxious around strangers, unsure about this new experience, or unwilling to sit still for very long. There are so many questions and concerns that surround it: at what age should I bring them? What can I do to ensure the visit is a good one? Here are 3 tips to consider before you book an appointment!
1. Go when they are 1 year old, or when first tooth emerges
Each dentist will have different advice when it comes to how old your child should be. We think that the earlier you go, the better! Plan to schedule an appointment when the child is 1 year old, or shortly after their first tooth emerges.
2. Bring them along on a visit
If your child is going to go to the same dentist as you, let them tag along and watch you as you get treated. They will have a chance to become more comfortable with the dentist and the office, and seeing you in the big chair will assure them that it’s safe, and not so scary!
3. Get them excited and familiar with dental care
Building excitement and familiarity around the first visit can decrease anxiety and fear in your child. Try reading them a picture book about going to the dentist for the first time, and talk to them about what to expect. Practice brushing and rinsing. You could even do a dental-themed craft; the more familiar they are with brushing and dental care, the better!
Ultimately, there are some things you can do to ensure your child has a good first visit to the dentist. Make sure you bring them as early as possible, so that you can instill good dental health habits and normalize the experience of receiving dental care!
